Requiem for a Dream (2000) NR - 3½ Stars

Oh My, such a disturbing look at drug abuse. It's sad look at the desperation of searching for your dreams and using whatever drug means needed to get there. Ellen Burstyn gives an academy performance as a pill popping mother, lost in her own world of loneliness.

Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn), lives for her television game shows. Her life consists of lounging in front of the T.V. day dreaming about how she wants to be a star on television too. Problem is, her son Harry (Jared Leto) and his best friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans), keep taking her T.V. downtown to hock for money to support their heroin habit. Sara has to go to the city to retrieve her T.V. cause it's all she lives for. When she finds out she has the opportunity to be on her favorite game show, she starts popping diet pills to fit into her beautiful red dress. Eventually she is strung out on pills the same as her son is strung out on heroin. I really liked the way the film was shot in a chaotic time frame as it fits right in with the chaos in the movie.
