Running on Empty (1988) PG13 - 3½ Stars

Heart wrenching family drama staring River Phoenix and Judd Hirsch. A family on the run from the FBI must give one of their sons, a chance at life. Mom and dad raise two great kids despite the fact they are moved from city to city to evade capture. I remember seeing this movie way back when it first came out, however it was like watching it for the first time and still fresh.

Annie (Christine Lahti) and Arthur Pope (Judd Hirsch) are a wanted family, along with their two children Danny (River Phoenix) and Harry (Jonas Abry). Back in the 60's Annie and Arthur were involved in a radical political protest of the Vietnam war. They were the master minds behind blowing up a napalm laboratory, injuring and causing the blindness of an innocent man. There plans did not include anyone being in the lab that day.

Wanted by the F.B.I. the two have been fleeing from town to town for the last 16 years. The children have been remarkably trained to take on new names and images of themselves and never make friends where ever they go. But Danny is now 18 and his one of many loves is his music. Along with his talented mothers help, Danny has been prat icing most of his life and has become quit good.

When the family moves to New Jersey, Danny attends a new school. The music teacher Mr. Phillips (Ed Crowley), thinks Danny has real talent and encourages him to take his talent seriously. He inspires him to audition for a popular college. Mr. Phillip's rebellious daughter Lorna Phillips (Martha Plimpton), takes a liking to Danny and it's the first time Danny has felt a love outside of his family. His passion for his music and the girl he's falling in love with, will divide the family but however painful, they must do what's right for their son.
