Red Dust (2004) R - 2½ Stars

The movie had the potential to be better but still a touching story of one mans fight against a nation. Problem was, even though you felt for Alex and joined his side against the racist officer, his lawyer seems out of place. It just wasn't that exciting of a movie to me.

In 1986, social activist ANC freedom fighter Alex Mpondo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) was tortured and beaten while in custody. He still bares the scars of the brutality Dirk Hendricks (Jamie Bartlett) a police officer, inflicted upon him. All he was trying to do was stand up for his right of equality. Alex returns to his home town in South Africa to testify before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission against amnesty for Hendricks.

In 2000, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TARC) was formed to give amnesty for those who stepped forward and told the truth of their wrong doings. But they must tell the whole truth, no matter what the consequences.

Sarah Barcant (Hilary Swank), a big city New York lawyer and Human Rights Activist, who has also returned back to her homeland in South Africa, decides to represent Alex to uncover the fate of his friend who has gone missing.
