George Malley, (John Travolta) is celebrating his 37th birthday with his friends Nate (Forest Whitaker) and Doc (Robert Duvall), at a local pub. He goes outside for some air and while gazing into the night, a bright light comes out of the sky and knocks him to the ground. When he comes to he discovers he has incredible powers for knowledge. At the library he checks out every book he can get his hands on and speed read them. He also discovers he now has the power to move things, predict earthquakes learn a different language in minutes. Some deem George the hero of their town where others are still spooked by his new powers. He meets Lace Pennamin (Kyra Sedgwick) and a romance begins. But as word gets out of George accomplishments the FBI wants to know more about him.I read from Karl Williams - All Movie Guide that "Scientology, led to charges that the film was veiled pro-Scientology propaganda."
