Quinceanera (2005) R - 3½ Stars

Set in Echo Park, Los Angeles this is the story of a young girl who is approaching her 15th birthday and dreams of what dress she will wear while riding in a Hummer on her way to her Quinceañera. In the Mexican culture, the Quinceañera is the celebration of a girl becoming a woman. However, it looks like our star has thoughts of womanhood a lot sooner, as she becomes pregnant at 14. The characters seem real enough and they draw you into their lives.

Magdalena (Emily Rios) is from a very religious family who's mother (Araceli Guzman-Rico) and father (Jesus Castanos-Chima) run a storefront church in Echo Park. She sees older cousin Eileen (Alicia Sixtos) have her elaborate Quinceañera and now it's all Magdalena can think about. The fabulous dress she'll wear and the Hummer Limousine that will cater to her needs on the way to the party. Her parents have other ideas about what's appropriate.

Herman (J.R. Cruz) is Magdalena boyfriend and gets her pregnant. Her life is never the same at her home as her father is disgraced and throws her out. With no where to go, she ends up at her uncle 'Tio" Thomas's (Chalo Gonzalez) home who's living with her cousin, Carlos (Jesse Garcia). At first, Carlos is not happy with her arrival but the two become close.

James (Jason L. Wood) and Gary (David W. Ross), are a gay white couple who has just bought the property that Tomas has been living on for many years. Carlos becomes very interested in the new landlords as he tries to keep up his machismo. They seduce Carlos and one ends up having an affair behind the other's back and the hockey puck hits the fan. Magdalena's family is evicted and their whole way of life is threatened.
