The year is 2035 and James Cole (Bruce Willis) is in jail. He is offered a deal, in exchange for his freedom, to travel back in time to 1990 six years prior to a deadly virus that will consume the globe. In 1996 this virus forced civilization underground because of the earth's poisonous air. People look at James like he is a mad man and he soon finds himself in a psychiatric facility where he meets Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe), Dr. Goines (Christopher Plummer) a virologist and Dr. Goines's son, Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt). James kidnaps Dr. Railly to take her to the future so she will believe him. When James finds a series of puzzling symbols from an animal rights group known only as The Army of the Twelve Monkeys, he begins to think Jeffrey might hold the answers to the whole thing.
