Awakenings (1990) PG13 - 4 Stars

Based on a true story where 15 patients respond to a drug and awake from their catatonic state. Most of the patients suffer from a sleep disorder called encephalitis. Williams and De Niro are excellent in his roles as doctor breathing new life into the terminally lost.

In 1969, Dr. Malcolm Sayer (Robin Williams) joins a team of doctors at a psychiatric hospital in the Bronx. There he plays around with different drug doses to see if he can bring a change in these patients. He is given permission to try a new drug out on the extremely "out of it" residences. One drug that seems to be working is L-DOPA and Dr. Sayer begins administering the drug to Leonard Lowe (Robert De Niro). Leonard has not spoken a word to anyone since childhood. When Leonard starts to show signs of improvement, Dr. Sayer gives the drug to 14 more patients.
