Max Klein (Jeff Bridges) is one of the few survivors of a fatal plane crash. He assists other survivors from the plane and flames and them almost calmly, walks away. The few that survived tell a tale of the hero that helped them to safety. When he gets home, he's still in shock and though calmly seems to not care for his wife wife (Isabella Rossellini) and son anymore. Somehow Max thinks he has a new found shield that protects and keep him fearless from any sort of harm.Bill Perlman (John Turturro), is the psychiatrist for the airline and puts him in touch with another survivor Carla Rodrigo (Rosie Perez). Carla is having a very hard time coming to grips with what happened as she lost her baby in the crash. The two help each other come to terms for feeling guilty they survived.
